Senior Softball at its most FUN

We play by our own rules

Born Again Jocks is built on the ideal that softball should be fun and available to anyone over 55+ regardless of ability or means. Pre- and post-game camaraderie is as much a part of our league as the game itself.

Softball games are played every Tuesday and Thursday morning throughout the summer at Valley View field in Bloomington, MN. Players are split into teams early in season to provide parity. While we encourage players to come as often as they can, there is no commitment to be there twice a week, every week. But once you join us, you’ll want to be here as much as you can!

We have adopted several unique rules to make softball safe and fun for seniors. There is no sliding, special base running rules prevent injuries and nets protect the pitchers. Read our complete rules here.

Covid-19. Yes, we are all tired of Covid, but it is still around. Players must comply with applicable federal, state, city, and BAJ rules regarding Covid. BAJ Covid protocols, and their enforcement, are subject to change, as conditions warrant.

Ready to join us? Come to the field or Reach out here.

The Born Again Jocks also provides many other sports programs for seniors throughout the year. Visit the main BAJ website at bornagainjocks.com.

Outside the lines

The fun doesn’t stop when the game ends. Post-game camaraderie and annual barbecues can be as memorable as the games themselves. And you won’t want to miss our annual trip to the Twins game where one of our players gets to throw out the first pitch.

Meet the Softball Committee

Bill Borchers

I have played BAJ softball since 2010. Everyone wants to play well and win, yet we are lighthearted enough to be able to laugh at our own miscues. It’s fun to play ball with friends, who may be teammates one season and opponents another. Either way, we can celebrate each other’s successes and sympathize with those annoying reminders that our skills aren’t quite what they used to be.

I usually play shortstop, but I can commit errors at any position.

George Seltz

I have been an active participant in BAJ Softball since 2015. My position has primarily been as a pitcher.

BAJ softball is like a time machine in that it transports us back in time to when we were 15 years old and playing ball with our buddies at a neighborhood park. We laughed, joked, teased and had conversations that would change the world! We played to win but didn't mind if we lost. Many of those friends and the memories we made have stayed with us for a lifetime. BAJ Softball has given us the same opportunity to have fun, stay active, keep old friends and make new ones. Figuratively, the BAJ Diamond is a treasure.

Bob Ikola

I have been playing softball with the BAJ since 2015. I've played a number of positions, but I like first base the best.

I really enjoy playing softball with the BAJ, but the camaraderie we have as a group is just as important.

Steve Wentworth

I‘ve been playing BAJ softball since I retired in 2014. I‘ve played recreational softball over the years, and otherwise tried to stay in decent shape. I enjoy BAJ because I try to play well enough to win, and talk a little smack, but I enjoy the camaraderie regardless of wins/losses. Plus our first-half opponents may be our second-half teammates. I play wherever I can do the least damage, usually outfield.

Bob Wandberg

I joined the BAJ Softball Program in 1999. Over the years I, and many other players, joined this softball league for four reasons. We enjoy softball,  the fitness benefits, the fun, and of course the social reasons. In addition, every year (since 2007) the Minnesota Twins invite us to a game and allow one of our players to throw out the first pitch. I enjoy that we attract players of all skill levels from a wide range of communities.

Richard Heller

I've been playing with the BAJs for about 10 years after a non-illustrious career in another Bloomington softball league. I've pitched in a prior Bloomington league and I play first base and the outfield in the BAJ. The best thing about playing is the friends you make and the comaraderie you experience. The games are twice during the week and in the morning which fits my schedule perfectly. I'm now at the age that allows me to use an illegal bat. YAY!!

Kevin Nelson

I started playing BAJ softball with the guys in 2018 after sitting on the sidelines for many, many years. The games are always fun and the best part is getting to hangout with fellow softball lovers for a few hours twice a week. At my age I never thought I’d have the opportunity to again play the game I loved growing up. BAJ softball has given me that opportunity. I hope to play for many more years, even if at some point I’ll need a designated runner.

Mark Keene

I joined BAJ Softball in 2017 shortly after I retired.

I have enjoyed the group immensely; I like the camaraderie, the games, the competition, the help to improve my game and the BS during and after the games.  While everyone is out there to play and compete, by the time we gather after, few can tell you the score.  However, most everyone can remember, who hit a home run, who made a great play or who deserves some razzing for a play they made…

Another thing that has kept me engaged are the long-term players.  There are mornings where I might not be jumping out of bed to go play (especially, if it’s a little chilly).  However, all I have to do is think that there will be plenty of older players that will still be there.  That’s usually enough to get me moving.

Join Us!

Your best softball days are still ahead of you. We hope to see you at the field.
